Medieval churches in england were more or less completely painted.  They painted saints, Bible stories, allegories, dooms, crucifictions and even imitation masonry.  In an illiterate age wall paintings graphically reinforced the message of the scriptures.  They have been called 'the Poor Man's Bible.'
